Baby Sign Language

Being a mom of 3, I have read many books and have been told a million different theories to raise my baby right. I am a preschool teacher and hold a B S in Child Psychology and Elementary Education, so I do have a pretty good idea of what may and may not work as far a baby raising.

I grew up with a girl who was born deaf. Therefore, I learned the language as a small child and never forgot it. My son, who is 6 now, learned a lot before the age of 1. He could communicate with no problems.

Now, Emma who is almost one, is also learning. It is amazing the amount of knowledge a child can absorb at one time. In one week, I have taught her please, bath, cup, more and eat. She has about 35 words in her sign vocab and she isn't even 1.

I personally believe that this is why my youngest children were so much more content than my oldest, who I didn't teach sign. (Mother of the Year, I know)

So, I would like to know your opinions. Have you had a a similar experience in your baby raising?

  1. I said I was going to teach Brea sign, but she started talking before I ever got into it much. I am planning on taking ASL this fall so maybe she can learn with me!

  2. I tried a little with my first, but have not tried at all with my second. It is intriguing!

Stumbled on your blog and enjoyed browsing!

  3. You're such an awesome mom I wish I was that good. I'm sad to say my oldest got all the extras while my youngest isn't getting all the special treats. LOL

Yup me mother of the year. Need more time in the day! :)

  4. I always thought it would be so awesome to know sign language. I did teach my kids a few basic signs: please; more; thank you, etc. It really benefited my youngest who talked very late.
